Aircraft Designations - B-25 type

Post by gary1954 »

With regard to the designation on the B-25, I understand that there was the
TB - trainer
VB - I believe VIP
RB - Recon
Now what the heck is a JB-25? is this a Training Hack

Always learning stuff and forgetting even more. Thanks in advance.

Don't forget these two:

F-10 ----- Photo Recon B-25

AT-24 ---- Twin engine trainer B-25 type

And there is the USN version: PBJ-1

Good Luck with your research.

Perhaps the JB-25 designation (which I never heard of) is an inadvertent distortion of the USN B-25 desgination of PBJ-1 ?

Just a thought.

To Gary1954:

RB-25 is not a "Recon" version.

The R is for "Restricted", such as in RB-26 or RP-38 or RP-322 or RP-40. The "R" designation for Recon came out much later than WWII, like RF-101C, RB-57 or RF-4C, which are Viet Nam era.

Dedicated "Recon" type ships during WWII seem to be "F" prefix, such as F-9, F-10, F-7 or F-6, etc.
Earlier on, there were designations of "Observation" types, such as O-47 or O-56. By the end of the war this designation had been phased out.
