Some (edit) B-models; ID location/squadron?

Post by Chris Brame »

Early stuff this time; one OD/NG and two NMF with 15 and 17 on the noses - any ID on the location, or the squadron logo being applied to the nose of the OD plane?
(Edit: Maybe March Field? The photos are from the estate of Lt. Miller B. Towman. AAIR lists him in a taxiing accident in A-17 35-77 on October 31, 1940 at March.)

The logo appears to be the the 11th BS, 7th BG. The OD A/C may well be recently out of depot maintenance where they received the camo finish. Plane in group numbers have yet to be applied on the tail.

Those planes look to be B-17B models,
retrofitted with the bath tub and flat side panels.

Just thought I'd bring it up...

I was wondering about that; I was guessing Cs because in the two images where you can make out the bubble atop the cockpit, it didn't seem to be offset to starboard like the B had been.

Chris,

The cowling is different, as are the panels aft of the cowl, and
the intakes. (although I could not see the intakes in your photos)

Aha. OK - the auction images weren't shot too clearly but I did save them anyway. Sold for $49.00 (whew!).

Update: The collection was bought by Rwcmilitaria; they're selling them individually. Good news is they posted better images:

So. Converted Bs, or regular Cs?

another one, the "life" archive is not the most user friendly search, but worth it.
