Those planes look to be B-17B models,
retrofitted with the bath tub and flat side panels.

Chuck is right. The "Flags" are for a build or design variation defined in the usage block, corresponding to some set of serial numbers. They do not correspond to the actual B-17 model numbers. The more I look at that scene, and the more I look at the
B-17C blueprints, I have come to the conclusion that they
cut the tail cone off the stage mock-up.

This is counter to my thoughts of about 5 years ago,
but I have learned much more about the B-17's
construction since then.

The first two pictures, we are almost 100% sure, are taken in 41-2595.
Life has a picture of the same bombardier exiting from "The Rat".

Scott, that one is B-17B 39-001, and the picture shows OD/Neutral Gray,
although it indeed was Lowry Field, Colorado.
