Re: I Got it! Mary Ann with the white tail stripe is 8584!

ALSO: 38-584 was first delivered to Hamilton Field, home of the 7th Bomb Group. NOW, the question is which squadron was she delivered to: 9th Bomb Squadron? 11th Bomb Squadron? 88th Reconnaissance Squadron? How do we find this out? Puzzled, Dan Katz Perhaps looking at the unit histories on film at ...

Chris, I love that movie. A lot of good real life flying sequences. And that is 1941 Texas passing beneath those wings. That is what's so cool about it. The movie does have some unexpected adult themes such as pre-marital sex and sexual extortion. Veronica Lake is smokin'. The only part I have an is...

If someone is going to go through the trouble of making artwork profiles for this airplane--why not do both? Show a profile of Mary Ann as the airplane appeared during the movie and show a profile of the airplane in Natural Metal in the airplane's early career. Both should be included as a matter of...

Just went through all of the posts and found the thread Dan Johnson posted concerning the "Hendricks Field--Prepare for Combat" book. It appears to be one of those books published by the AAF and intended for personnel. If the book was published by the AAF, then it is a public domain item and anybody...

Dan Johnson, What is the title of this book? Who is the Author? What year was it published? Is there an ISBN number? Is it one of those AAF books published by the US govt and given to personnel who served at the base, like a year book? I have a book about the classes at Maxwell Field in 1943. Thanks...

According to the Aircraft History Card, B-17B # 38-584 was assigned to Hobbs in July 30, 1943 and was placed on Class 26 on October 29, 1943. I checked the AAF aircraft accident index and looked up several B-17 accidents that occurred at Hobbs AAB and at other bases in New Mexico during October 1943...

Re: It was Tom Wilson

Actually, the story is this: Tom Wilson called me up one evening, and said that someone on another message board said that "Mary Ann" was a B-17B, and that no one believed him. He did not mention the board, but I decided to look at some pictures, and watch my old "Air Force" VHS tape, and confirmed...

Dan K........ Go for it. As far as I'm concerned you have the passion for this and have pushed it to this point....I don't think anyone will have a problem with you working it into something that can be published. I'll add a bit about the material to my next B-17 update but that goes to a very limi...

Dan, I had spotted the photo airplane's serial number sandwiched between those two famous B-17s but did not find it significant enough to post since I was focused on the subject airplane not its neighbors in the number chain. I must admit that I was too intent on studying the physical aspects of the...

Okay Dan. Sending out the money for the B-17B reels on Saturday. I will go downstairs and hit the microfilm tonight. Hey, great job on that. I am totally happy for you. Now on number 10, the fake serial number can be seen on the right hand side of the vertical fin, if I remember correctly? Or am I r...

Wow!!! Great Work! That is what Number 10 appears to be. Good Job!!! According to Roger Freeman's book on B-17 serial numbers: 38-584 Delivered Salt Lake City 7 Sept 1940; Lowry 24 July 1943; Written off 6 December 1943. I'll check for an accident in early December 1943 and see if there is an accide...

What do you think of Mr. Moto?

What do you think of Mr. Moto?

Dan and Dan,

All three of my PittBull mix dogs can do the "Mr. Moto" trick as performed by the famous "Air Force" dog Tripoli, providing us with hours of amusement, just as in WWII.

Mustang Driver, The interior color for those airplanes is Chromate Green. There is also another color used on some pieces but I don't think it was used on B-17 interiors but was used on other airplanes in various areas like wheel wells and landing gear pieces--the color is called Zinc Chromate, whic...
