Re: B-17 "ash reciever"
I spent some time searching for the photo of this but could not find it. I have seen these ash receivers before--they look like little cups that are attached to the column. They have a small lip on them for resting a butt. I looked at the B-29 reference book: B-29 IN DETAIL AND SCALE and you can see...

Re: B-17 "ash reciever"
Yep, Ford ash trays. B-24s had them too.
And if I remember correctly some B-17s had little ashtrays attached to the control columns too.
Every one smoked back then.
I quit over ten years ago.

An Unusual B-17 accident
This is one of the most unusual B-17 accidents that I have come across. This B-17, with landing gear extended, landed horizontally (side to side) on a hill while in a bank that exactly matched the slope of the terrain--at night. Read on. . . . 7-24-43A. Ephrata, Washinginton. At 0054, a Boeing B-17...

A detailed summary of this accident can be found on
Page 697, Volume 2, FATAL ARMY AIR FORCES AVIATION ACCIDENTS IN THE UNITED STATES, 1941-1945.
There is also an AAF accident report for this crash.
Good Luck.

Go to the excellent index at Craig Fuller's AAIR website: Go to www.aviationarchaeology.com to find out if there is a report.
What date did the accident happen.

Re: Aircraft Designations - B-25 type
To Gary1954: RB-25 is not a "Recon" version. The R is for "Restricted", such as in RB-26 or RP-38 or RP-322 or RP-40. The "R" designation for Recon came out much later than WWII, like RF-101C, RB-57 or RF-4C, which are Viet Nam era. Dedicated "Recon" type ships during WWII seem to be "F" prefix, suc...

Perhaps the JB-25 designation (which I never heard of) is an inadvertent distortion of the USN B-25 desgination of PBJ-1 ?
Just a thought.

Re: Aircraft Designations - B-25 type
Don't forget these two:
F-10 ----- Photo Recon B-25
AT-24 ---- Twin engine trainer B-25 type
And there is the USN version: PBJ-1
Good Luck with your research.

Maybe they had to slay a dragon to get the B-17 out of New Guinea.
