The B-17 Flying Fortress remains one of the best known and popular aircraft in the history of American aviation. This volume effectively tells, for the first time, the little known history of the Flying Fortress in both Navy and Coast Guard service from the mid-1940s to the late-1950s. Operating as the PB-1W, the Navy Fortresses pioneered the development of radar for airborne early warning and led to the development of the AWACS technology so essential to modern warfare. The Coast Guard PB-1Gs, equipped with either wooden or inflatable lifeboats, provided air-sea rescue capability and international iceberg patrol for over a decade of service. Here is the complete story, in both photos and detailed text, of the famous B-17 in this little known but important service. Great for naval air historians, B-17 buffs, and modelers. Includes photos, many before unpublished, of nearly every individual Fortress in Navy and Coast Guard Service, paint and markings detail, appendices with serial and civil numbers referenced, and histories of each of the individual aircraft. Complete your B-17 library now!! 8.5"x11", 120 pages, softbound. Published by Aero Vintage Books. Please Note!!! Regretably, we've discovered some problems with our remaining stock of B-17 In Blue, which covers the Navy and Coast Guard versions of the B-17. The books, which are perfect bound, have a glueing defect that can cause a binding failure. Our remaining stock of the book, which had a retail price of $16.95, is now going to be sold "as-is" for less than half price, or $8.00 per book, plus shipping. The book is quite usable if carefully handled, but the binding of these copies will probably eventually fail. We are trying to deal with the book's printer to make right on the defective books. Nonetheless, the book is a valuable source for B-17 scholars and others.
